The Spanish team last refereed in a European tournament with the second leg of the quarter-final between Chelsea and Liverpool on Stamford Bridge, a spectacular match that ended 4-4 and sent Chelsea to the semi-final. Luis Medina Cantalejo participated in World Cup 2006 and became famous after his fourth official duties in the final between Italy and France. From his position on the sideline he saw what the other three referees didn’t, Zinedine Zidane head butting Marco Materazzi. Cantalejo relayed this information to Horacio Elizondo which sent off Zidane. Cantalejo refereed four matches in the World Cup.
In my previous post “Champions League referee 2009” I did predict Cantalejo being appointed to the UEFA Cup final. Let’s see if I get Busacca for the CL final as well.
