Webb and Mullarkey got it right

by Martin Rødvand on June 16, 2009

Howard Webb was involved in yesterday’s great match between Brazil and Egypt which ended 4-3 to Brazil after a late penalty.

The Egyptian Football Association contested the decision of sending off the player who handled the ball on grounds of the fourth official (Australian Matthew Breeze) using video replay to communicate the correct decision to Howard Webb.

FIFA released a statement today denying all use of video replay and praising the communication between Howard Webb and his assistant Mike Mullarkey.

FIFA have this afternoon written to the Egyptian Football Association regarding yesterday’s FIFA Confederations Cup match between Brazil and Egypt.

FIFA had received a letter of complaint from the Egyptian FA following the match at the Free State Stadium in Mangaung/Bloemfontein. Whilst not disputing the correctness of the referee’s decision to award a penalty in favour of Brazil, and show the Egyptian player Ahmed El-Mohamadi the red card, the Egyptian FA questionned the manner in which the referee Howard Webb came to his decision.

FIFA analysed the decision by going through all the evidence at its disposal, including the referee’s match report, as well as the additional statement that Howard Webb provided at FIFA’s request.

A thorough analysis of the aforementioned documents revealed that the decision in question was achieved through teamwork between the match referee and his Assistant Referee Number 1, Mike Mullarkey, who confirmed the offence to the referee from his clear viewing angle.

You can see the incident here. (Don’t mind the commentary who clearly isn’t very into the laws of the game.)

As expected UEFA dismisses red card appeals

by Martin Rødvand on May 11, 2009

UEFA today announced that the protests submitted by both Manchester United and Barcelona with regards to Darren Fletcher’s and Eric Abidal’s red card, and Daniel Alves’ yellow card during the 2nd leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final has both been rejected.

UEFA writes:

In reaching their decision the Control and Disciplinary Body concluded (i) that the protests had not been submitted within the required 24-hour deadline of a match for filing protests, as specified in the Disciplinary Regulations, and (ii) even if they had been admitted they would have been rejected as unfounded as there were no grounds for contesting the referees’ original decisions.

This was fully expected as the regulations clearly states that a protest against any caution or sending off should be submitted within 24 hours, and the only reason for a disciplinary action to be rescinded is in the case of a mistaken identity.

We did see an example of this during the group stage match between Celtic and Aalborg where Italian referee Matteo Simone Trefoloni sent off the wrong player from Aalborg. This decision was later changed and the correct player had to serve the suspension.

We are still waiting on any announcement after the incidents following the Chelsea – Barcelona match.

Friedel wins red card appeal

March 24, 2009

I wrote yesterday about how Brad Friedel got sent off during Sunday’s game between Liverpool and Aston Villa and that Villa appealed for a wrongful dismissal to the FA.
I expected a one-match ban for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity, but the FA proved me wrong by today overturning Martin Atkinson’s red card.
The FA writes [...]

Villa appeal Friedel sending off

March 23, 2009

Usually I’m not covering the different appeals by the huge number of clubs in the Premier League, but this one is just hilarious.
Yesterday, Villa was trashed five to nothing at Anfield, and Brad Friedel was sent off for a challenge on Fernando Torres in the 65th minute. Nothing malicious at all about the challenge, [...]
