by Martin Rødvand on June 28, 2009

The Professional Game Match Officals has announced that Mike Riley, a longtime Select Group official and Elite group UEFA referee, will be taking over the general manager position from Keith Hackett 1st of September later this year.

From Refworld.com:

“The Board of the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) has appointed Mike Riley as its General Manager Designate. This appointment will take effect from 1 September 2009 with departing General Manager Keith Hackett completing a handover period by January 2010.

The appointment signals the end of an illustrious refereeing career for Riley who has refereed in the Premier League for the past thirteen seasons, officiated in both an FA Cup Final and Carling Cup Final and served as an international referee for eleven years, 7 of those in the Elite Group of Uefa referees.”

Mark Clattenburg’s appeal successful

by Martin Rødvand on February 18, 2009

I’ve previously reported that Mark Clattenburg was sacked by the PGMO, but that he appealed the decision.

Earlier today the PGMO released this statement:

Following a disciplinary investigation into issues relating to his private business affairs, Mark Clattenburg was initially dismissed by a PGMO Disciplinary Inquiry. Mark Clattenburg appealed against this decision.

After full and careful consideration, the Appeal Panel has concluded that the original Disciplinary Inquiry decision should be upheld but a less severe sanction imposed.

The Appeal Panel has therefore reinstated Mark Clattenburg as a Select Group Referee, but ordered that a suspension of eight months be served from the original suspension date of 6 August 2008.

In addition Mark Clattenburg has been reminded of his responsibilities and contractual obligations as a Select Group Official, particularly in regard to full disclosure of any outside business interests.

PGMO is confident that he has the ability to regain his position as one of English football’s top officials.

Good news for all football fans, if Clattenburg can turn it around and return as the excellent referee he was last season the officiating level in the Premier League will rise. If we are to believe the statement Clattenburg will be available in March/April.
