EURO 2008 – media appearances

by Martin Rødvand on June 5, 2008

UEFA is expected to release the list of what matches the twelve refereeing teams will take charge of on Thursday. I will just precede the announcement with some fun articles I’ve found around the web with regards to our tournament referees.

The assistant of Howard Webb, Darren Cann is interviewed by the Eastern Daily Press and he is not afraid of getting nervous during the tournament.

“The only time I get nervous is if I have to ref in front of 20 people at Eaton Park. We are lucky in this country that we can be involved in crowds of up to 70,000 and most of the stadiums in Austria and Switzerland will hold about 30,000, so we will treat it like we do the Premier League.”

In the build-up to EURO 2008 Howard Webb decided to drop the police helmet and concentrate fully on his task at hand according to The Star.

The Swede Peter Frøjdfeldt is missing his daughters “studentexamen” (student exam?), and he explains that he has sacrificed much to be a top referee, the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet writes.

Tom Henning Øvrebø’s assistant Geir Åge Holen is interviewed by Romerikes Blad, and he is certain no one will try to influence their judgement by bribing them.

The next post will include the referee appointments for the twelve first matches.
