UEFA bans Eduardo for two matches

by Martin Rødvand on September 2, 2009

A very brief statement from UEFA yesterday:

The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body today examined the case of the Arsenal FC player Eduardo “for deceiving the referee” during the UEFA Champions League play-off second leg match on 26 August against Celtic FC, and has suspended the player for two UEFA club competition matches.

Arsenal are currently holding their breath while waiting for a more thorough explanation from UEFA before they decide if they will appeal the decision.

The Eduardo case is a pretty clear-cut case, and I hope Arsenal will be sensible and accept the ban. And if Arsenal decides to appeal I hope UEFA will be firm and keep away from their trend of reducing bans after appeals.

Drogba and Bosingwa ban reduced

by Martin Rødvand on July 15, 2009

After the spectacle that was the Champions League semi-final between Chelsea and Barcelona, Drogba and Bosingwa was handed reasonable bans by UEFA. They decided to appeal against the punishment and UEFA announced their appeal decision today.

UEFA.com writes:

“Under the UEFA Appeals Body’s verdicts, Drogba will be suspended for five UEFA club competition matches – the last two of which will be deferred for a probationary period of three years – and has been fined €15,000. Bosingwa will be suspended for three UEFA club competition matches, the last of which is deferred for a probationary period of three years, and fined €10,000.”

Drogba and Bosingwa got off with one match less to serve. Not what I wanted from UEFA.
