Howard Webb to referee showpiece final

by Martin Rødvand on May 20, 2010

English referee Howard Webb has been selected by Uefa’s referees committee to handle Saturday’s match between Internazionale and Bayern München in Madrid. Webb will be assisted by Mike Mullarkey and Darren Cann, with Martin Atkinson working as the fourth official.

The trio will also be going to South Africa for the World Cup next month, and in 2008 they refereed two matches in the European Championship in Austria and Switzerland.

Howard Webb was appointed to the select group of referees in 2003 and in 2005 he was put on the Fifa-list. In September 2006 he was appointed to his first Champions League game between Steaua and Lyon. With this pinnacle appointment Webb has refereed 15 Champions League matches, including quarter-finals two consecutive years.

He is familiar with the two teams involved in this final game of the tournament, having refereed Bayern München three times and Internazionale two times.

This is only the second time an English referee has been appointed to the top match in European football after the restructuring and rebranding of the tournament from European Champions Cup to the Uefa Champions League. Philip Don was in charge of the 1994 final in Athens between Milan and Barcelona. Graham Poll was in 2005 appointed to the Uefa Cup final.

Good job, I only got Webb correct. Still, I got the last two Champions League final referees correct.
