Frank De Bleeckere, the Belgian referee, will be in charge of Friday’s U-20 final between Ghana and Brazil in Egypt. The final will be the 43-year-old’s fourth match of the tournament, having already refereed the opening match Egypt – Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria – Spain and Australia – Brazil.
De Bleeckere will be assisted by Peter Hermans and Walter Vromans with Spaniard Alberto Undiano as fourth official.
The Belgian team is a hot contender for a spot in the WC 2010 in South Africa, and their participation in the final can only increase their chances. However, taking charge of one of the last finals in these tournaments doesn’t guarantee you anything. In the 2005 U-20 WC, Norwegian referee Terje Hauge was chosen for the last game of the tournament, but omitted from the Germany WC.
Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura will take charge of the third-place match.
