The PGMOL announced last week that the English quartet Howard Webb, Phil Sharp, Darren Cann and Martin Atkinson will take charge of one of the four UEFA Champions League quarter-finals 7th or 8th of April. Seeing as three of the four quarter-finals include an English team we can only assume they will be refereeing the match on Camp Nou between Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
However, it’s speculated that UEFA may be appointing the English team to the all-English tie between Liverpool and Chelsea. As far as I know this has never previous happened in any major UEFA tournament in modern time.
The PGMOL announcement:
The PGMOL is pleased to announce that four Select Group officials will take charge of a UEFA Champions League Quarter Final First Leg.
The actual game that they will oversee is still to be confirmed but it will take place on either Tuesday 7th April or Wednesday 8th April 2009.
All the confirmed appointments will be posted when UEFA announces them on Sunday and Monday.
