Assistant referee lets Bosingwa off the hook

The assistant referee Mo Matadar in yesterday’s match between Liverpool and Chelsea did see the incident between Bosingwa and Benayoun in the final part of the match according to a statement from the English Football Association. It reads:

The FA has confirmed that no disciplinary action will be taken against Chelsea defender Jose Bosingwa.

Bosingwa was involved in an incident with Liverpool’s Yossi Benayoun during the Premier League match at Anfield on 1 February.

Referee Mike Riley has informed The FA that, while he did not see the incident himself, it was seen by his assistant Mo Matadar. No action was taken against Bosingwa by the officials.

Under the FIFA Laws of the Game, The FA is prohibited from taking disciplinary action when incidents are seen at the time by the match officials.

Matadar was promoted to the select group of assistant referees in 2007 and he’s currently a FIFA assistant referee. In October ’07 he worked as an assistant referee in the Champions League match between CSKA Moskva and Inter Milan together with yesterday’s referee Mike Riley and Glenn Turner.

Update: The appointments for the upcoming fixtures have been published by The PGMOL. Mike Riley is not refereeing any match this matchday, while Mo Matadar is assigned the Coca-Cola League 2 match between Grimsby Town and Exeter City. The second assistant from the Liverpool – Chelsea match, Jeremy Simpson, is assigned the Premier League match between Tottenham and Arsenal.
